At the request of the Education working group of the International Council of Academies of Engineering and Technological Sciences(CAETS<\/a>), the National Academy of Engineering of Uruguay (ANIU) compiled the views of its members on the main challenges and needs in the training of the engineers of<\/strong> the future.<\/p>\n

The consultation, carried out at the end of 2024, resulted in a document sent to CAETS on February 17, 2025, which summarizes five strategic lines<\/strong> that, in ANIU\u2019s opinion, should guide the evolution of engineering education programs.<\/p>\n

1. Improvements in the curriculum and in teaching<\/h2>\n

It is proposed to strengthen the teaching of mathematics, basic sciences and engineering sciences<\/strong>, with a more practical and applied approach.<\/p>\n

The importance of laboratory work, modeling and industry-related projects is emphasized, as well as a better balance between analytics and design<\/strong> throughout the course.<\/p>\n

2. Digital skills and data management<\/h2>\n

Engineers must master current technological tools<\/strong> such as programming, simulation software, 3D printing and drones.<\/p>\n

It also stresses the need to train skills in data analysis, information search and filtering<\/strong>, and artificial intelligence integration, while contemplating their ethical and academic risks.<\/p>\n

3. Response to global challenges<\/h2>\n

Training should include content related to sustainability, climate change, water availability and energy.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The latter topic covers renewable sources, storage, hydrogen technologies, and understanding energy markets<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

4. Professional culture and ethics<\/h2>\n

ANIU stresses the need to train engineers with critical thinking, cultural awareness and communication skills<\/strong> in various formats and languages.<\/p>\n

The role of professional ethics<\/strong>, case studies and commitment to technical quality are<\/strong> also emphasized<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

5. Administration, management and innovation<\/h2>\n

The incorporation of notions of economics, finance, project management, work in diverse teams and leadership is proposed. In addition, the promotion of entrepreneurship<\/strong> and innovation in professional practice is encouraged. <\/p>\n

Finally, it is emphasized that all university graduates -engineers or not- must be able to recognize their own skills, keep themselves updated and commit to continuous training<\/strong> throughout their professional life .<\/strong> <\/p>\n
