{"id":11821,"date":"2025-08-15T14:19:08","date_gmt":"2025-08-15T17:19:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aniu.org.uy\/sin-categorizar\/second-conference-on-climate-change-innovative-solutions-for-uruguay\/"},"modified":"2025-08-15T14:34:43","modified_gmt":"2025-08-15T17:34:43","slug":"second-conference-on-climate-change-innovative-solutions-for-uruguay","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aniu.org.uy\/en\/news\/second-conference-on-climate-change-innovative-solutions-for-uruguay\/","title":{"rendered":"Second conference on climate change: innovative solutions for Uruguay"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Monday, August 11, the National Academy of Engineering of Uruguay held the second conference of its cycle on climate change, entitled \u201cAdaptation to climate change: innovative solutions for Uruguay\u201d.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>This activity was a follow-up to the <a href=\"https:\/\/aniu.org.uy\/en\/news\/climate-change-and-agriculture-a-warning-with-opportunities\/\">first conference<\/a>, held on May 27, which addressed the relationship between <strong>climate change and agriculture<\/strong>, with emphasis on the risks and opportunities for the sector.<\/p>\n<div style=\"padding: 56.25% 0 0 0; position: relative;\"><iframe style=\"position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%;\" title=\"Conference \"Climate Adaptation: Innovative Solutions for Uruguay\".\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/1110342157?badge=0&autopause=0&player_id=0&app_id=58479\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><script src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/api\/player.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The meeting -broadcasted by Zoom- was attended by <strong>two national referents<\/strong>: Eng. V\u00edctor Sp\u00f3sito Acquistapace (honorary professor at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ort.edu.uy\">Universidad ORT Uruguay<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deakin.edu.au\">Deakin University<\/a>, Australia) and Eng. Chemistry Andrea de Nigris (Manager of Climate Action for Sustainable Development of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gub.uy\/ministerio-ambiente\">Ministry of Environment<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h2>A \u201csuper wicked problem\u201d that demands urgent action<\/h2>\n<p>Esposito defined climate change as a \u201csuper wicked problem\u201d: a global challenge marked by <strong>complexity, uncertainty, risk and volatility<\/strong>, which cannot be solved by single approaches.<\/p>\n<p>He presented experiences and proposals for Uruguay in:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Second energy transition, focusing on green hydrogen for transportation and industry.<\/li>\n<li>Sustainable agriculture and forestry, integrating climate-adapted technologies and soil management.<\/li>\n<li>Reduction of enteric methane emissions through special pastures and feed additives such as red algae.<\/li>\n<li>Blue-green and green-urban infrastructure to manage water resources, conserve biodiversity and mitigate impacts in cities and rural areas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>He also proposed the <strong>creation of strategic planning groups<\/strong> that report directly to the highest levels of decision making to ensure effective implementation of priority projects.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-11829\" src=\"https:\/\/aniu.org.uy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/efectos-del-cambio-climatico-en-uruguay.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1230\" height=\"562\" srcset=\"https:\/\/aniu.org.uy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/efectos-del-cambio-climatico-en-uruguay.jpg 1230w, https:\/\/aniu.org.uy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/efectos-del-cambio-climatico-en-uruguay-1024x468.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/aniu.org.uy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/efectos-del-cambio-climatico-en-uruguay-768x351.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1230px) 100vw, 1230px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Climate governance and local adaptation<\/h2>\n<p>De Nigris reviewed the  <strong>Uruguay\u2019s progress and challenges<\/strong> in climate governance, highlighting:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The institutional framework of the National Climate Change Response System.<\/li>\n<li>Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement.<\/li>\n<li>National Adaptation Plans (NAPs) in key sectors: agriculture, coasts, cities and energy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>He stressed that, although climate change is global, <strong>adaptation is local<\/strong>, and faces challenges such as financing, effectiveness evaluation and the urgency of protecting the most vulnerable groups.<\/p>\n<h2>Closing with an eye to the future<\/h2>\n<p>The activity concluded with an exchange of questions and comments between the speakers and the audience.<\/p>\n<p>Both agreed that <strong>the time to act is now<\/strong>, and that coordination, strategic vision and sustained commitment are required to <strong>build a more resilient Uruguay<\/strong> in the face of climate change impacts.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/aniu.org.uy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/adaptacion-al-cambio-de-clima__victor-sposito-acquistapace.pdf\">Presentation by Eng.
