Learning difficulties in this subject affect the educational trajectories of thousands of students and limit the development of careers in science, technology, and engineering. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1000\" data-end=\"1417\">To contribute to the analysis of this issue, the Interacademic Group for Mathematics Education (GIEM) prepared the report <strong data-start=\"1141\" data-end=\"1203\">*Mathematics Education in Uruguay: Some Reflections<\/strong>, a document that brings together the perspectives of specialists from four national academies on the main factors that influence the teaching and learning of mathematics.<\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"7d7qz9\" data-start=\"1419\" data-end=\"1464\">A collaborative effort among four academies<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1466\" data-end=\"1817\">The GIEM was established based on a recommendation from the report \u201cSTEM Education in Uruguay: A Challenge for Everyone\u201d and was composed of representatives from:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"1466\" data-end=\"1817\">the National Academy of Sciences of Uruguay,<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1466\" data-end=\"1817\">the National Academy of Economics,<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1466\" data-end=\"1817\">the National Academy of Engineering of Uruguay and<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1466\" data-end=\"1817\">the National Academy of Medicine.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1819\" data-end=\"2256\">The document analyzes aspects such as the importance of mathematics for personal development and national development, the cultural and social context of mathematics education, the contributions of neuroscience, the relationship with STEM education, the use of technology, and the challenges associated with educational transformation, concluding with a set of proposals aimed at strengthening mathematics education in Uruguay.<\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"sk7tux\" data-start=\"2258\" data-end=\"2295\">A Contribution to the Education Debate<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2297\" data-end=\"2831\">The report argues that improving mathematics learning requires a long-term, evidence-based approach that takes into account both teacher training and the characteristics of the educational and social context.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2297\" data-end=\"2831\">It also emphasizes the need to promote mathematics education that contributes to the development of critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and to the formation of citizens capable of understanding a world increasingly shaped by scientific and technological knowledge.<\/p>\n<p data-section-id=\"13plcx9\" data-start=\"2833\" data-end=\"2857\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/aniu.org.uy\/en\/documentos\/mathematics-education-in-uruguay-some-reflections\/\">Download the report<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Teaching mathematics is one of the main challenges facing the Uruguayan education system.
