{"id":12188,"date":"2026-08-10T09:46:45","date_gmt":"2026-08-10T12:46:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aniu.org.uy\/sin-categorizar\/academics-discussed-the-challenges-of-teaching-mathematics-on-tv-ciudad\/"},"modified":"2026-08-10T09:46:45","modified_gmt":"2026-08-10T12:46:45","slug":"academics-discussed-the-challenges-of-teaching-mathematics-on-tv-ciudad","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aniu.org.uy\/en\/news\/academics-discussed-the-challenges-of-teaching-mathematics-on-tv-ciudad\/","title":{"rendered":"Academics Discussed the Challenges of Teaching Mathematics on TV Ciudad"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><strong>Engineer<\/strong> <strong>Julio Fern\u00e1ndez<\/strong> , president of the National Academy of Engineering of Uruguay (ANIU), and <strong>Dr. Roberto Markarian<\/strong> , member of the National Academy of Sciences of Uruguay, participated in the program <em>SobreCiencia<\/em> on TV Ciudad, where they reflected on the main challenges of teaching mathematics and the need to promote changes in its educational approach.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">During the interview, Dr. Markarian pointed out that difficulties with math often take root at an early age: \u201cI believe children are taught to struggle with math,\u201d while also cautioning against stereotypes that portray this subject as particularly difficult.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">For his part, Mr. Fern\u00e1ndez emphasized the importance of moving toward new forms of teaching and argued that it is necessary to \u201cshift from a reproductive approach to a productive one,\u201d fostering in students the ability to reason, discover patterns, and apply their knowledge to new situations. <\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The conversation also addressed the role of new technologies and artificial intelligence in teaching the subject, as well as the importance of improving mathematics education as a tool for equity and development. In this regard, Mr. Fern\u00e1ndez emphasized that strengthening education in these areas constitutes a \u201cvery powerful lever for social progress.\u201d  <\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The interview took place as part of the presentation and discussion of two reports on mathematics education, scheduled for August 11\u2014an event through which the academies aim to help foster a broad
